Rockville Reports Redesign
In the past, the City of Rockville has prioritized print communications, specifically a monthly newspaper that is sent to all residents. For the first time, the bi-annual 2016 community survey reported the website as the main way residents find information about the city. As a result, the city worked to digitize the print newspaper by creating www.rockvillereports.com.
The initial iteration was an online archive of the print newspaper’s articles, with no visual hierarchy or categorization.
Goal.
The website must act as a source for Rockville news that encourages exploration and discovery.
My Role.
As digital strategist, I worked collaboratively with a team of in-house communicators and designer to reimagine the organization of the website. After leading card-sorting exercises and grouping the existing content, I developed the core categories that would inform the information architecture.
Working with the designer, I co-built the custom Wordpress website with templates to be used by the editorial team.
In addition to redesigning the site, I created a content and marketing strategy that leveraged social media and a weekly email newsletter to increase traffic and long-term readership.
